Right from when mum and dad (who himself was an accomplished portrait artist), gave my brother and I pencils and paper, we began to draw and paint. At Clewer Green School I was further encouraged by the teachers who entered my paintings into the Brooke Bond National Travel Scholarship & Educational Awards – in 1965 I was awarded second prize for Junior Art, but a year later, got First Prize. Although each prize was a book, the latest one was about being an artist and was a personally signed copy by the artist himself! This recognition was all I needed to realise my dream of one day, becoming an artist.
So, painting became my passion throughout the remaining schooldays at Trevelyan, and after a year long struggle to get qualifications at East Berks College, I trod the streets of London to find work that could allow me to be creative. At just seventeen years old, I got a job in Soho as a ‘stripper’! … a colloquialism for a Paste-up-artist. I knew from their interest in my art folder that I could get artwork jobs as well. Within weeks I received my first cartoon job – a leaving card. For the next several years, every special person got a special leaving card. Another realisation - how many special people there were in the world! During this very influential period of my life, I continued to paint and draw, having artwork displayed in the public areas of the company, receiving commissions for portraits as well as my first exhibition on the Windsor & Eton Bridge on the first Saturday of every July, at which my first sales were to Eton College boys and someone who worked for Puffin Books who bought 2 puffin pastel drawings. These formative years paved the way into a lifelong adventure through the exciting world of art. From which I gained 36 years knowledge and experience of talking with customers and providing what they want – whether a cartoon, painting or design. | 15/08/10 Case Study for Book Illustrations & Cartoon Animation Approached by a local Bracknell Architect to provide cartoons for a book he’d written, that covered biographical aspects of his life from the late 1950’s, and accentuated by numerous anecdotes that I (and probably you) could relate to. You know – those frustrating moments when we realise how much of our precious time is being wasted by extraneous matters! more | 03/09/09 How to Become a Professional Wonder Woman and Keep Your Sanity – by Lynda Cant • Elevate your career • Gain control of your life • Become a better leader • Be confident in knowing your worth • Handle stressful situations • Free up precious time to have a better work life balance more | 20/04/09 In support of local events this year, I plan to offer my painting and cartooning skills to their organisers, to help promote their event and raise funds. From an original painting or cartoon I can provide a quality digital image that can be used on the Web or printed for tickets, leaflets, banners, prints etc,. The first of these events is the Royal Windsor MG Heritage Festival, taking place in and around Windsor Castle this Saturday 25th April. more | 06/04/09 I was invited by Jon Davey to draw caricatures of the event speakers at his Business in Berkshire, Online Marketing Magic event. Each speaker was planned to talk for about ten minutes. My job was to 'capture' them during their presentation and provide small digital images to accompany their article. more | 03/04/09 Story by Phillipe Boucheron. Working on behalf of Macdonalds Hotels, Compleat Angler hotel brochure.Don’t ever let anyone tell you that ‘cold calling’ doesn’t work. One day in July a man called at the Compleat Angler with some paintings of Swan Upping that he had done. He came from nearby Windsor and knew that the hotel made a feature of this annual event, when traditionally the Queen’s Watermen caught and nicked the beaks of all the swans on the Thames to show that they were the property of the Sovereign. Today they are simply ringed and counted. He thought that the hotel might be able to display a few for guests to buy. Instead of being sent off with a flea in his ear he landed a commission to produce a painting of the hotel to be used as the cover for this magazine. That artist is Denis Blandford and this is his story. more | 13/03/09 In today’s multicultural society there is an increasing need to communicate ideas and processes more effectively than the written or spoken word. A picture can convey a feeling, explain an idea or make a statement. However, a cartoon can also add humour, focus attention, tell a story and be memorable - surviving trends in fashion and industry. more |
