Case Study for Book Illustrations & Cartoon Animation

Approached by a local Bracknell Architect to provide cartoons for a book he’d written, that covered biographical aspects of his life from the late 1950’s, and accentuated by numerous anecdotes that I (and probably you) could relate to. You know – those frustrating moments when we realise how much of our precious time is being wasted by extraneous matters!

Anyway, because it was easy to relate to, the cartoons kept developing and each character evolved into recognisable people … becoming more believable as the story unfolded.

As the balance between the cartoons and well penned story harmonised, work began on developing the concepts for a dedicated website and YouTube animations.

About 300 cartoons were created for the book ‘MULTI-STORIES OF AN ARCHITECT’, and with full colour cartoon covers, the book went to print.

This website is essentially the domain of the cartoon characters, to show off their qualities and provide a little amusement for those disgruntled with the ‘human world’. However, they also cover ‘real’ issues and have their own Blog – and each of them is an ‘expert’ in their own field, so will be pleased to help you!

To help further promote ‘Multi-Stories of an architect’ and their website, I embarked on a journey into the world of animation. One that proved technically challenging and bizarrely reflected the frustration of the cartoon character!

The animation centres around Pat Pending, whose spirit for life and enthusiasm for his job, slowly saps away during the start of each day . . . by constant interruptions from technology, environment, people and home life – who cannot relate to this?

The animation was hand drawn and coloured directly onto the computer. It was set at only 12 frames per second to help reduce processing and file size issues. Over 3,000 frames culminated in a rich 4 minute cartoon animation with sounds, voices, creatures and some bizarre moments - especially for the different endings at the end of each morning.

The book is now for sale, the website is up and running, and 6 cartoon animations are viewable on You Tube. Promotional items have also been produced.

And the creative director was yours truly ... what a tough job I have :)

Please call me if I can be of assistance.
